Awesome Sherlock Women Appreciation Project → Molly Hooper
Oh, Molly, my dear, my favorite minor character from the first series who I am so glad is finally getting the wide spread fandom appreciation that she deserves. There’s not really much I can say that this article hasn’t already said in ways a hundred times better than I could ever manage, but I shall do my best.
I feel in love with Molly the first few minutes that she was on screen, plucking up the courage to ask someone out only to get turned down via a massive miscommunication. I remember a lot of people that I talked to about the first series saw this as a sign of doormatism. Why didn’t she stand up for herself and explain that wasn’t what she meant rather than acquiescing to his interpretation and bringing him the coffee? Because sometimes, in an embarrassing situation, all you want to do is extract yourself from it. And for Molly, that also meant fulfilling an offer that she’d never actually made in the first place just because of the type of person that she is.
Sweet, thoughtful, caring, and intelligent, but also anxious, habitually tongue tied, and timid, she’s the sort of woman who fades into the background and becomes invisible to most everyone until she’s needed for something. She’s the type of person that I can relate to who suspects, and knows in some cases, that she’s not quite good enough and will never truly measure up in the eyes of most people, but who still wants to do the best by everyone that she possibly can.
She seems more than she’s given credit for. When you’re in the background the one thing you can do is watch. She knows more than most realize. Just because she works with dead people doesn’t make her any less of a doctor. She cares in ways and degrees which leave even the great Sherlock Holmes’ mind boggled. Who else (other than John, at least) could leave him near speechless through nothing more than being kind?
And more than anything else, Molly is strong. It might not be the kind of strength that we’re accustom to seeing on TV or movies. It isn’t the out there, in your face, bending you over a table, and making you say her name sort of strength. It’s a quiet inner fire that burns bright and provides warmth and light to all of those around her. She’s a beacon in the darkness that guides you back home, and one that I am definitely looking forward to seeing so much more of.
